017. Wall Tablet - Thomas Peter Towle d.1969

Location:  Tower South Wall

 

  1. The memorial consists of a wall tablet in the form of an oval laid on its side. Composed of a flat panel with a reeded frame. The lettering on the memorial is in Modernised Roman Capitals and it and the reeded line are incised in gold leaf.

  5. Thomas Peter Towle 1876-1969.  ' Mr Thomas Peter Towle of Nanhill, Woodhouse Eaves, died aged 93 on 2nd September 1969.Throughout his life he had been connected with the hosiery trade. After leaving Barrow upon Soar Grammar School he worked at a Barrow on Soar firm and was manager of a mill by the time he was 21 years old.
    Shortly afterwards he took over a disused chapel at Mountsorrel and with £300 working capital he started his own hosiery business. He went on to open premises at Sileby and Loughborough and the company Towle Ltd also had premises at Coalville and Melton When he was over 70 Mr Towle as chairman of Towles Ltd went to South Africa to open a hosiery manufacturing firm . The firm became one of the largest firms in South Africa.
    Following his retirement he farmed in Charnwood Forest for a year and then devoted his spare time to his garden. As a memorial to his first wife Ellen, who died 25 years before Mr Towle, he built the Ellen Towle Convalescent home at Woodhouse Eaves. He left a son and a daughter.'       (ref a).

  7. The Lord Bishop of Leicester (The Right Rev. Ronald R Williams, D.D.), dedicated the 3   new bells, frame and fittings and the tablet on 8 December 1972.
